Arrival in Puerto Natales

Puerto Natales

The day is mostly transit, a three hour bus ride up from Punta Arenas with guanaco and rhea sightings along the pampa, followed by Erratic Rock's free trek briefing to sort out trail logistics and gear. Evening winds down with a walk along the Costanera boardwalk as the Seno Ultima Esperanza goes still at dusk, then a night at Hotel Costaustralis before heading into Torres del Paine.

Overview

Today is all road and setup. The shuttle from Punta Arenas takes about three hours across open pampa, so settle in and keep an eye on the roadside: guanaco and the occasional rhea show up more often than not. Once you land in Puerto Natales, the afternoon is loose until the Erratic Rock trek talk at 3 p.m., a free daily briefing that's become the de facto orientation for anyone headed into Torres del Paine. It covers trail conditions, water sources, and how camp bookings actually work on the ground, which matters more than any guidebook since conditions shift week to week. After that, gear rental shops next door can fill in anything you're missing. Close the day with a walk along the Costanera as the light drops over Seno Ultima Esperanza, then settle into Hotel Costaustralis for your last soft bed before the trail. Tomorrow you're on a bus to Pudeto and then the catamaran to Paine Grande, so tonight is really about packing and resting up.

Tips

  • Wear layers for the drive: pampa weather swings fast, and the bus can run warm despite a cold morning outside.
  • No reservation needed for the Erratic Rock talk, just show up a few minutes early since seating fills up.
  • Go to the Costanera boardwalk close to sunset (around 6:30 to 7 p.m. this time of year) for the calmest water and best reflections.
  • Puerto Natales has better prices on freeze-dried meals and fuel canisters than the park itself, so buy trail food and gas here rather than waiting.
  • Ask the Costaustralis front desk to hold a bag of town clothes while you're trekking. Almost every hotel in town does this for free and it saves you from lugging extra weight.

Getting Around

Everything today is walkable once you're off the bus. Erratic Rock to the Costanera boardwalk is a 4 minute walk, and from there to the hotel is another 14. No taxis or buses needed for the rest of the day, just good shoes and daylight (sunset is late enough in early spring that you won't be rushing).

Local Tips

Puerto Natales runs on trekker time: shops, gear rentals, and even some restaurants keep flexible hours built around the Erratic Rock talk and bus schedules to the park. Card payment is common but small kiosks and some rental shops still prefer cash (Chilean pesos), so carry some. The Milodon monument at the north end of the Costanera is a nice preview if you're curious about the actual Cueva del Milodon, which you'll visit on your way out of the region on Day 7.
