You land at Copenhagen Airport (CPH) at 1:00 PM, and the easiest way into town is the M2 metro, about 15 minutes to Kongens Nytorv with no taxi needed. By mid-afternoon you're at Nyhavn, the canal with the row of colored 17th-century townhouses that everyone photographs, and from there it's a short hop to Strøget, the long pedestrian street that runs down to City Hall Square. Dinner is booked at Cap Horn right on the Nyhavn waterfront, and then it's a four-minute walk to check in at your hotel in Indre By, which puts you in the middle of everything for the rest of the trip. This first day is really about getting oriented on foot before tomorrow's museum and market stops start in earnest.
Pack a light rain jacket. Copenhagen weather shifts fast even in late August, and the covered stretch near the Nyhavn harbor front gives you somewhere to duck if a shower rolls through.
Cap Horn fills up on weekend evenings, so if you haven't already reserved, call or book online today rather than walking in. Mains run 175 to 245 DKK as of early 2025, so budget accordingly and check the current menu online before you go.
Strøget is worth timing for late afternoon since the crowds thin out after the workday rush, and Illum and Magasin du Nord (both right on the street) are good fallback stops if the weather turns.
There's no need to arrange airport transfers in advance. The metro is cheap and frequent enough that a taxi isn't worth the extra cost on day one.
From the airport, take the M2 metro directly to Kongens Nytorv, the natural anchor for today's stops. Nyhavn to Strøget is an 11-minute transit ride, or you can walk it in about 20 minutes if you want to see more of the old town. Strøget to Cap Horn is a 12-minute walk, and from dinner it's just 4 minutes on foot to your hotel. Everything today is compact enough that you won't need a taxi once you're out of the airport.
Danes tend to walk fast and stick to the right on sidewalks and escalators, so keep pace or step aside. Tipping isn't expected since service is included in restaurant prices, though rounding up for good service is common. Jaywalking is taken more seriously here than in a lot of European cities, Copenhageners generally wait for the green light even with no cars in sight, so it's worth following suit near Strøget's crossings.

Yesterday ended back at the hotel after Nyhavn and Strøget, and today opens gently with a short walk to Rundetaarn before it gets busy. The 17th-century tower has a spiral ramp rather than stairs, so the climb is easy even if the sky stays gray, and the rooftop view over Copenhagen is worth the ten minutes it takes. From there it's a quick walk to Torvehallerne, the two glass market halls where you can piece together a lunch from a cheese stall, a smørrebrød counter, and good coffee rather than sitting down for a full meal. The afternoon shifts to shopping at Illum, with Royal Copenhagen and Georg Jensen close by on the same stretch of Strøget if porcelain or silver interest you, before the day settles into its main event: Tivoli Gardens from midafternoon into the evening. Tivoli is built for staying late, since the gardens change character once the lights come on after dark, so plan on dinner inside rather than rushing out early. Tomorrow is a lighter travel day before departure, so tonight is the one to enjoy without an eye on the clock.
Pack a light jacket or umbrella just in case, Copenhagen's weather in late August can turn damp without much warning, and comfortable shoes matter more today than any other day given the walking between stops and the standing around inside Tivoli.
Rundetaarn opens at 10:00 and today's visit is timed right at opening, which is the best way to see it before tour groups arrive. Entry runs around 40 DKK (as of early 2025). Tivoli Gardens entry is about 145 DKK (also early 2025 pricing), and rides cost extra unless you buy the unlimited ride pass at the gate, worth it only if you actually plan to ride things rather than just wander and eat.
No reservations are needed for Rundetaarn or Torvehallerne. Grøften inside Tivoli gets busy in the evening, so if you want a table for frikadeller rather than standing at a counter, it's worth walking in as soon as you arrive at 15:00 to put your name down, then coming back later once the lights are on.
Everything today is walkable. Rundetaarn to Torvehallerne is 8 minutes on foot, Torvehallerne to Illum is 14 minutes, and Illum to Tivoli Gardens is a 20 minute walk, mostly through Strøget so it doubles as a bit more window shopping. After Tivoli, it's a 25 minute walk back to the hotel, or if your feet are done, one stop on the metro from Central Station to Nørreport gets you close.
Danes queue in an orderly way and don't love being cut in front of, especially at food counters in Torvehallerne where it's not always obvious where the line starts. Tipping isn't expected anywhere today, service is built into prices. Inside Tivoli, benches and quiet corners away from the rides are easy to find if you want to sit and just watch the lights for a while rather than keep moving.
