Overview

This is a day trip, not a stay: you land in Tallinn on the morning ferry from Helsinki and sail back out the same evening, so the whole itinerary is built around a single loop through Toompea and Old Town. The crossing takes about two hours, and once you're off the boat everything worth seeing is within a 15 minute walk. Start at Kohtuotsa for the rooftop view over the harbor, work down into Raekoja plats and Viru street for shops and coffee, then finish the afternoon in Rotermann Quarter before circling back to the terminal for the return sailing. It's a tight but comfortable single crossing if you keep moving between the late morning and early afternoon stops.

Tips

• Wear real walking shoes. Toompea's cobblestones and the climb up Pikk jalg are steep and uneven, and you'll cover a few miles round trip by the time you're back at the terminal.
• Book your ferry tickets in advance if you haven't already: Tallink and Viking Line fares run roughly 30 to 40 euro one way as of mid 2026, and weekend sailings fill up.
• Call ahead or reserve online for Rataskaevu 16 first thing in the morning. It's a small, popular room and walk-ins aren't guaranteed a table at lunchtime.
• Check in for the return sailing at least 45 minutes before departure. Don't cut this close just for one more espresso in Rotermann.
• Bring a light jacket even if the forecast looks clear. The viewing platform is open-air and exposed to wind off the harbor.

Getting Around

Everything today is on foot. From the terminal it's about a 10 to 12 minute walk into Old Town, then another climb up to Kohtuotsa. From there it's downhill to Raekoja plats (roughly 9 minutes), a further 12 minutes to Rotermann Quarter, and about 16 minutes from Rotermann back into the lanes for lunch at Rataskaevu 16. The walk from the restaurant back to the terminal takes around 35 to 40 minutes, so budget for that rather than assuming a quick dash. No buses or taxis are really necessary unless your feet give out. There's a taxi rank and a tram stop near the terminal if you'd rather ride the last stretch back.

Local Tips

Estonians are reserved with strangers but perfectly happy to help if you ask a direct question. Tipping 10 percent at restaurants like Rataskaevu 16 is appreciated but not obligatory, it's already a service-included culture. Card payment is standard everywhere, including small amber and linen shops on Viru street, so there's little reason to carry much cash. If it rains, the covered terraces along Viru street are a fine place to wait it out with a coffee rather than pushing through Old Town's narrow lanes in a downpour.
